What is hydrogen peroxide solution, and when should I use it?

Hydrogen peroxide systems use a 3% H₂O₂ solution to disinfect lenses — much more effective than MPS antimicrobials, but the peroxide must be fully neutralised before the lens touches your eye.

Neutralisation happens automatically in a special case containing a platinum disc (one-step systems) or via a chemical tablet (two-step systems). The process takes 4–6 hours.

Use it when:

  • You have solution sensitivity — eye irritation 1–2 hours after lens insertion, especially with redness, suggests a reaction to MPS preservatives.
  • You have sensitive or dry eyes — peroxide systems leave no preservative residue on the lens.
  • You have protein-prone deposits on monthlies — peroxide handles protein better than MPS.

Critical safety rule: never put unneutralised peroxide in your eye. It causes immediate, severe pain (a brief but very unpleasant 5–10 minute sting). Always use the system's own case with the platinum disc, never substitute. If you accidentally rinse a lens with peroxide directly from the bottle, do not insert it — rinse with saline first.
