How do I insert a contact lens for the first time?
The mechanics are simple, but precision matters. Practice in front of a clean, well-lit mirror.
- Wash hands with unscented soap, rinse, and dry with a lint-free towel. Never use moisturising soap — residue ends up on the lens.
- Place the lens bowl-side up on the tip of your dominant index finger. Check the shape — if the edges flare outward like a saucer, it is inside out. A correct lens has a smooth U-shape.
- Hold the upper eyelid open with your non-dominant hand, then pull the lower lid down with the middle finger of your dominant hand.
- Look straight ahead (or slightly upward) and gently place the lens on the lower white of the eye, then on the cornea.
- Release the lids slowly and blink a few times. The lens self-centres.
If the lens feels gritty for more than a minute or vision stays blurry, remove it, rinse with multi-purpose solution, check for damage, and try again.
Carry a small bottle of re-wetting drops in the first weeks — they help if your eye feels dry during the day.
