Can I cry while wearing contact lenses?
Tears are the eye's native lubricant. Soft contact lenses tolerate any volume of crying. What you may notice:
- Brief blur: extra fluid changes the optical surface for a few seconds.
- Lens drift: heavy reflex tearing can float the lens off-centre. A few slow blinks recentre it.
- Mascara streaks: not the lens's fault but they end up on the lens surface. Take a moment to clean it (rub-and-rinse) if you wear reusables.
One scenario where crying matters: if you cry while inserting or removing, wait until you've stopped. Tears + handling = much higher chance of dropping the lens or tearing it.
Long-term: chronic crying and stress affect tear-film quality. If you find lenses uncomfortable during a stressful period, that's real, not imagined — and re-wetting drops genuinely help.
