Can I play sport in contact lenses?
Contact lenses are widely used in elite and amateur sport. The advantages over glasses:
- Wider field of view (no frame in the periphery).
- No fogging during warm-up or rain.
- Stable optics regardless of head position.
- Compatible with helmets, masks, goggles.
Best lens choices by sport:
| Sport | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Running / cycling | Any daily-wear lens. Wraparound sunglasses cut wind dry. |
| Football / rugby / basketball | Daily disposables. Loss risk is high — fresh pair on standby. |
| Combat sports (boxing, BJJ) | Daily disposables. Eye injuries happen — fresh pair after. |
| Swimming | Daily disposables + tight goggles. Discard after each session. |
| Skiing / mountaineering | Silicone-hydrogel daily (UV-exposure-rated where possible). UV-blocking goggles still essential. |
| Hot yoga / sauna | Lenses tolerate humid heat well but air-conditioned spaces dry the eye fast — keep re-wetting drops nearby. |
Carry a small lens-case kit and spare pair on long away days.
