Can I wear contacts every day from the start?
The cornea has no blood vessels — it gets oxygen directly from the air. Contact lenses, even modern silicone-hydrogel ones, reduce that oxygen flow slightly. Your eye needs a short adaptation window to get used to the new equilibrium.
A typical first-week schedule looks like this:
| Day | Wear time |
|---|---|
| 1 | 4 hours |
| 2 | 6 hours |
| 3 | 8 hours |
| 4 | 10 hours |
| 5+ | Full day — but never overnight unless the lens is rated for extended wear |
Watch for late-afternoon dryness or burning. If they appear, end that day early and try again tomorrow.
The maximum daily wear time depends on the lens — most soft lenses are designed for up to 12–14 hours. Going beyond that increases dryness and infection risk.
