Do contact lenses feel like something is in my eye?
Modern soft contact lenses are made of materials with water content of 38–78%, and the curve is matched to your cornea. Within 1–3 minutes of insertion the eyelid stops "noticing" the lens edge — the same way you stop feeling a wedding ring after a day.
If you continue to feel the lens after several minutes, the likely causes are:
- Inside-out lens — the edge flares outward instead of cupping. Quickest fix: flip it.
- Lens not centred — gently blink several times or guide the lens to centre with a clean fingertip on the closed lid.
- Wrong BC — if the curve is too flat or too steep for your cornea, the lens shifts with every blink. Your optician needs to refit.
- Dry eye — the lens drags on a dry surface. Re-wetting drops or a higher-moisture material help.
Lasting discomfort is never normal. Don't train yourself to ignore it — get a refit.
