How long does it take to get used to contact lenses?
Adaptation has two layers: handling (insertion, removal, hygiene) and tissue tolerance (cornea and tear film adjusting to having a foreign object on them).
Handling becomes muscle memory within roughly a week of daily practice. Tissue tolerance varies by lens material:
- Soft daily disposables — 1 to 3 days of mild awareness, then nothing.
- Soft monthly silicone hydrogels — similar, with occasional end-of-day dryness in the first week.
- Rigid gas-permeable (RGP) — 2 to 4 weeks of conscious lens awareness, longer if wear is intermittent.
If discomfort, redness or blur lasts more than 2 weeks of consistent wear, contact your fitter — the lens parameters may need adjustment.
For an easy start we usually recommend one-day disposables — no cleaning routine, fresh lens every morning.
