What are toric contact lenses?
Standard contact lenses are spherical — their power is the same in every meridian. Toric lenses are not: they carry a cylinder correction at a specific axis, and they need to land on the eye in the correct orientation every time you blink.
Stabilisation methods include:
- Prism ballast: a heavier lower portion that uses gravity to orient.
- Peri-ballast: thinned upper and lower edges so the lid pressure orients the lens.
- Dual thin zones: two thin areas at 3 and 9 o'clock for natural settling.
Toric lenses are typically more expensive than spherical ones (15–30% more) and the parameter range (BC + DIA + SPH + CYL + AXIS) makes inventory bigger. Production is also slower since each combination is its own SKU.
