Why do my eyes burn 30 minutes after putting in my lenses?
Delayed-onset stinging (15–60 minutes after insertion) is the classic sign of solution sensitivity. The mechanism: MPS preservatives (PHMB, polyquaternium-1) bind to the lens and slowly release onto the cornea over 30+ minutes.
Resolution path:
- Switch to a peroxide system. Peroxide neutralises into salt water — no preservative carry-over. About 60% of sensitivities resolve here.
- Switch to daily disposables. No solution exposure at all. About 30% additional improvement.
- Switch lens material. Some people react to one silicone-hydrogel formulation but not another.
Other possible causes of delayed stinging:
- Lens deposit buildup (check by inspecting an old vs. fresh lens under bright light).
- Cosmetic ingredients migrating from eyelids — review eye-area products.
- Mild dry eye revealed only by lens wear — see if re-wetting drops every hour help.
If 30-minute burning is accompanied by visible redness, discharge or light sensitivity, stop wearing lenses and see an optician — it could be early infection.
